About The Learning Circle
PHILOSOPHY
At The Learning Circle, our classrooms combine age groups for an enriched childcare experience. Although multi-age or ‘composite’ classrooms may be a common feature in some childcare settings now, it was rare when TLC was founded.
Not all childcare programs are alike, and multi-age classrooms are a practice Julie fought for early in her career as a childcare professional and educator. As one parent remarked, “Having been raised in a large family, it makes sense that older children would naturally set the example for the younger ones, and younger children would have their own lessons to teach.” However, it may come as a surprise to know that uniformity (in age) had been the norm in early learning environments just 25 years ago. It was Julie’s leadership and persistence that transformed the potential for learning and care in preschool classrooms throughout the state.
“At The Learning Circle we see children as diverse individuals who can grow together at their own pace rather than expecting that they conform to specific age-related expectations.” –Julie

- A positive self image
- An eagerness for learning
- Pro-social behavior such as taking turns, caring for others, and sharing
- Cognitive skills, problem solving, concept development
- Expressive / receptive language
- Collaborative play and social skills that cultivate sharing and functioning in large groups
- Creativity and imagination
- Respect and empathy for others
- ‘Self-help’ skills that foster independence
TLC staff work together to create a safe and supportive environment to help every child gain confidence in themselves while building a community that is supportive of each other’s unique abilities and contributions.
